At the start of class (after tuning), everyone places their sanshin in front of them, faces the Sensei, and bows saying “Yoroshiku Onegai Shimasu”.

At the end of class, everyone places their sanshin in front of them, faces the Sensei, and bows saying “Arigato Gozaimashita”.

Some tips passed on from Wesley Ueunten
Some are important in a dojo (classroom) where every sits on the floor on tatami or zabuton.

Treat the sanshin with respect:
    Don’t step over a sanshin
Don’t leave your sanshin lying on the floor
Use a cloth to clean the neck of your sanshin when you have finished
playing. Otherwise your fingerprints will ruin the finish.
When setting up or taking off the uma under the strings, don’t scrape it
across the the snake skin (real or fake).
Leaving the uma under the strings during storage will damage the snake
         skin
Don’t eat or drink over your sanshin.

Treat your classmates with respect:
Don’t sit (on the floor) with your legs stretched out or your knees up
Don’t play too loudly when the Sensei is checking other people’s tuning
Don’t play too loudly during the breaks, when others are not playing

Help set up before the class and clean up after the class.
    Help serve food and drinks.
